چکیده

In previous work, we introduced the notion of Instrumented Logical Sensor Systems (ILSS) that are derived from a modeling and design methodology [2, 4]. The instrumented sensor approach is based on a sensori-computational model which defines the components of the sensor system in terms of their functionality, accuracy, robustness and efficiency. This approach provides a uniform specification language to define sensor systems as a composition of smaller, predefined components. From a software engineering standpoint, this addresses the issues of modularity, reusability, and reliability for building complex multisensor systems. In this report, we demonstrate the practicality of this approach and discuss several design and implementation aspects in the context of mobile robot applications. This work was supported in part by the Advanced Research Projects agency under Army Research Office grants number DAAH04-93-G-0420 and by NSF grant CDA 9024721.

Automated approach for quantifying the repeated sit-to-stand using one body fixed sensor in young and older adults.

Much is known about the sit-to-stand (STS) and its biomechanics. Currently, however, there is little opportunity for instrumented quantification of the STS as part of screening or diagnosis in clinical practice. The objectives of the present study were to describe the feasibility of using an automated approach for quantifying the STS using one sensor location and to start testing the discrimina...

Instrumented Sensor System Architecture

Sensor systems are becoming ubiquitous throughout society, yet their design, construction and operation are still more of an art than a science. In this paper, we define, develop, and apply a formal semantics for sensor systems that provides a theoretical framework for an integrated software architecture for modeling sensor-based control systems. Our goal is to develop a design framework which ...

A Compact Wearable Sensor Package for Clinical Gait Monitoring

We have developed a compact, wireless, wearable, shoe-mounted sensor package that is designed to provide continuous and real-time monitoring of gait for clinical biomotion analysis. This paper discusses the initial design of our hardware, consisting of a sensor-laden insole and a removable instrumented shoe attachment. Information about the three-dimensional motion, relative position, and press...

Evaluation of Hand Grasping by Instrumented Glove

In this paper the evaluation of effectivenes of instrumented glove in measurement of hand opening and preshaping during reach-to-grasp movement is described. In the experiment presented in this work the reach-to-grasp movement of one healthy subject was measured by two different types of motion-tracking devices (3D optical system, Optotrak, and commercial instrumented glove, 14 sensors Ultra Da...

Using Many Simple Sensors for Automatic Monitoring in the Home

About 1 in 5 Americans have some kind of disability, and 1 in 10 have a severe disability [16]. Instrumented environments can be used for automatic monitoring for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. We describe a system that uses a handful of motion detectors to predict light switch usage in an instrumented home. We use a naive Bayes learner with an automatically extracted feature ...
